CitySketch: Stern

video

The Stern Brothers - Isaac, Louis, and Benjamin - were sons of German Jewish immigrants who started selling dry goods from their store in Buffalo in 1867. Twelve years later they hired Henry Fernbach, a fellow Jewish immigrant from Germany, to design their flagship store at 32 West 23rd Street in Manhattan. Ladies from all over the city flocked to Stern Brothers for their Paris fashions. Doormen wearing top hats greeted customers as they entered the store. In 1913 they moved north, across the street from Bryant Park where they continued until 1969. They were in business for over 130 years before being integrated into Macy's and Bloomingdale's. The place is a Home Depot now.
